A somewhat shaky and rusty opening league game at West Park on Sunday saw the lads eventually see off a spirited and game Riverside outfit.
The first half started evenly and Bryan Waplington was tested a few times with a bit of pressure from the hosts... Our basic passing and positional play was lacklustre all over the park but two quick goals on 17 and 19 should have given us some composure... First Vaughn Hallsworth ran on to a through ball to round the keeper and minutes later Nick Gill fired in from the edge of the box to make it 2.
With ten minutes before the break Riverside pulled one back with a free header from a corner.
After a reshuffle and some home truths Kirk Hallam seemed to get their game together eventually... Chris Gilmartin won a tackle and released Christian Freestone down the right and his deep cross was headed in by Steve Gomm... A minute later though Daz Darren Taylor handled in the box and Riverside converted the spot kick.
Immediatley though we scored again to the frustration of the home side... Freestone tapping in after good work from Gomm.
Waplington pulled off some cracking saves but could do nothing with Riversides third.
5 minutes from time and Riverside had a free kick and scored to level at 4 each.
Character showed though with 4 mins left Gomm powered in a fifth then in the last minute combined with Ghislanzoni for the skipper to seal the game.
Waplington was superb and once Gommys dad showed up, Steve's game improved immeasurably.
Next up Mickleover at home... Hope to see Spike there to support
